Project overview.

Shards is a Para 84 (now Paragraph 84(e) of the NPPF) exceptional quality new dwelling in Cuckfield, Mid Sussex. Morgan Carn Architects obtained planning permission in 2015, with subsequent revisions to improve the lower ground floor living space and resolve buildability challenges in the original scheme.

The structural approach centres on Nudura insulated concrete formwork, a system that delivers a thermally isolated concrete core with exceptional airtightness. Combined with internal brickwork, the construction achieves outstanding levels of thermal mass, moderating internal temperatures naturally across both summer and winter conditions.

Jake White contributed to the technical design package at Stage 4, working through a series of design developments to translate an ambitious and complex scheme into a buildable construction package.

This project was completed whilst working as an employee of Morgan Carn Architects.

Both Shards and Weald House were recognised at the Sussex Heritage Trust 2024 Small Scale Residential Awards, submitted by Morgan Carn Architects.
