Project overview.

The brief was to reimagine this Victorian semi-detached in Charlwood, Surrey with a single-storey rear extension that felt resolved rather than added-on.

The main design challenge was a skewed boundary fence line. Rather than fight it, the roofline was allowed to respond, evolving into a gently sloping ridge that gives the extension its distinctive form. The result reads as a considered piece of design rather than a standard box.

On the gable end, an oak-clad steel frame adds warmth and structural honesty. The natural timber against the contemporary glazing ties the extension back to the character of the Victorian original without resorting to pastiche.

Planning and technical design completed through RIBA Stages 1–3.
